METRIC vs NPT vs AN/ORB SIZES EXPLAINED

There are 3 sizes we sell, Metric, NPT and AN/ORB.
Metric thread type is most common in Europe. It has a cylindrical inner and outer diameter precise in millimeters. There are several parts of a Metric thread to measure. Below is an illustration of this
NPT is short for National Pipe Thread and is popular amongst low pressure hydraulics for years. Most NPT fittings have a tapered thread, and the wedging of the thread is how it tightens and loosens up to. This style of union is bulky and as the fitting does not screw all the way up, a thread sealant/tape is required to ensure the connection doesn't leak.

AN is short for Army/Navy fittings and is the standard for many hydraulic lines and performance hoses. AN sizes start from -2 and go up to -32 but the most common are between -3 and -20. AN fittings are also known as JIC and have a UNF thread. They are really popular connect flexible hoses to accessories. ORB (short for Universal Ring Boss) are exactly the same as AN in terms of thread and size but seal using an o-ring.
AN sizes

The key grip on AN fittings is also measured in inches and since European sizes are metric (millimeters), an adjustable socket wrench or inch tools is recommended during assembly so you get the correct engagement. There are special tools just for AN fittings, but a standard adjustable wrench works great.
